Interview Questions for the Minister

Perhaps you have been contacted by a church about the possibility of ministering there. Maybe you have already had initial phone conversations and are about to interview with their search team (search committee). Many concerns that you might have about an opportunity to minister in a new congregation may be alleviated if you ask the right questions before accepting the position.

I have been researching the topic for several years now and have compiled a rather "exhaustive" list of questions that could be used when speaking with search teams and/or pastor(s).

 

Sample Questions:

  1. Aside from the upheaval of looking for a new staff member / pastor, what has been the most upsetting event in the life of this church?
  2. In your opinion, what areas of concern need to be addressed by this congregation?
  3. Tell me about the governing board - personnel committee, deacons, elders, etc...
  4. What important decisions have been made recently, and at what level of leadership were they determined?
  5. How would you describe your church?
  6. List any new proposals in the planning stages.
  7. How was your search team / committee selected?
  8. Give me a brief history of your church?
  9. Which word best typifies your understanding of a Pastor's position in the church? Servant? Shepherd? Leader? Authoritarian? Preacher? Pastor? Worship Leader?
  10. Relate some of the goals / visions you have for your church?
